La electrofisiología cardíaca es la ciencia que investiga, diagnostica y trata los problemas de la actividad eléctrica del corazón o trastornos del ritmo cardiaco (“arritmias”). Los electrofisiólogos son los cardiólogos que se han especializado en este campo.
A nivel internacional existe la Sociedad del Ritmo Cardiaco (“Heart Rhythm Society”, HRS) que es una asociación que mejora el cuidado de los pacientes promoviendo la investigación, educación y la evaluación de los lineamientos y guías para la aplicación de los diferentes tratamientos en este campo.
De los miembros que pertenecen a esta sociedad en más de 70 países, algunos son reconocidos como miembros “asociados” (“Fellows”, F.H.R.S). Para otorgar esta distinción se analiza la experiencia, entrenamiento y compromiso con la investigación y desarrollo del tratamiento de los trastornos del ritmo cardiaco en su medio.
Recientemente, en el Congreso anual de la Sociedad de Ritmo Cardiaco (HRS) realizado en mayo 2011 en San Francisco, CA, USA; la Dra. Vivien Araya Gómez, Cardióloga y Electrofisióloga de nuestro país y miembro de la HRS desde hace más de 10 años fue distinguida con el grado de “Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society” (F.H.R.S).
